Endless Descent/The Rift (1990)
Sci-Fi/Horror/Action Rated R
Plot
An experimental submarine, the "Siren II", with a very experienced crew is sent to find out what happened to the "Siren I", misteriously dissapeared in a submarine rift. Things go awry when they begin to find things that shouldn't be there...
Acting
Stars the always undependable Jack Scalia who is very wooden in his role, and also co-stars R. Lee Emrmy, and Ray Wise. Ermey and Wise both do there best in their roles, although Emery's character is the familiar one dimension military authority, and Wise is given little to due for most of the movie. John Toles-Bey was very enjoyable in his small role.
Gore
Lots of exploding creatures, and some people. Also some people are eaten part by part by sea creatures. Very good gore scenes.
Sex/Nudity
None
Final Thoughts
Whether you call it "Endless Descent" or "The Rift" this is a very enjoyable b-level movie. It doesn't provide anything terribly original, and it certainly wouldn't qualify as "high art" by any means, but it did not fail to entertain. It took a good 30-40 minute to really get into the meat of the story, but once it got there it was highly enjoyable. There is a variety of very cool creatures, and solid practical effects (other than the shots of the exterior of the sub that made it look like a 1 or 2 man vehicle) , and a story, that while being somewhat incomplete and lacking detail was still an interesting one. Definitely worth seeking out one that borders on consideration as a b-movie classic.
