Scarlet Salem -- November 2010

While still relatively new to the film industry, Scarlet is a fast rising scream queen in the b-movie horror world. She has appeared in many of the movies from NFTS productions and Joe Knetter.

Thank you for participating in our interview!

Thank you for having me.

Firstly why don’t you tell us about yourself!

Well, as many of you know, I’m a huge horror fan, and have been since I was 5. One of the first horror films I’ve seen was The Exorcist. That movie scared the shit out of me and I’ve loved horror since then. The fact my mom didn’t want us kids watching that ’trash’, made me want to watch it even more. So, the fact that I can be a part of what I love, is amazing to me. I love acting, especially in horror films. When I was in my teens, my friends and I would make short, fun, mini horror films. But
honestly, when I was younger, I never thought I’d be where I am today.

How and why did you get into the business?

I was at a metal concert in 2005 and a photographer came to me and said he liked my goth look. He gave me his card and told me to set up something with him. It wasn’t till 2006, that I finally got a hold of him and set up a shoot. Since then, I’ve
been hooked. I started out in modeling and got used to being in front of a camera.
From modeling, I got into acting. I seen a posting on a horror forum for a horror
film being shot in St Paul, Minnesota called ’Pajama Party Massacre’ by NFTS
Productions. Did a mini audition and got the part. The rest is bloody history!

What are your aspirations?

My aspirations are to do what I love and make a living on it. There’s nothing better
than getting paid to do what you love.

Who are your idols, and/or influences?

I have a few, but the main one would have to be Elvira, Cassandra Peterson. She is
such a big influence on me. She’s such a powerful woman in the horror industry. Her sexy looks and attitude make her amazing.

Tell us about your movies, What should we expect from them?

You can expect many things from my films. It tends to be low budget to big budget,
from cheese ball to serious. You tend to see me in mostly horror films, just because
I have a love for it, but I’ve also done action, drama, and comedies. I’m a jack of
all trades and love to try new things.

What where the best, worst, and hardest parts of making these movies?

I’d have to say the best part is everything. I’m doing what I love, what can be
better than that? There really is no worst or hardest parts about it. Working on a
film takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears but is always worth it in the finished
product. There will always be hard times, but that’s with anything.

Any unique/interesting stories about making these movies?

Every film offers you something new. Its hard to pick one specific story that
happened on set because there are so many. From working in a desert, out in the
middle of no where, with no internet or phone and a crazy director, to dangling from
a 4x4 trying to fake kicking someone in the balls to actually doing it, to being
chained up in a basement barely wearing anything and getting my hand cut off, to
filming in a location with alligators nesting in a stream a few yards from you, to
filming in a haunted building and in between takes going ghost hunting with fellow
actors. There’s always something fun and interesting to be had on a film set. You
never know what to expect next.

I know you do a lot of convention’s as well (I met you at this year’s Rock and Shock in Worcester, MA), any interesting story’s from those?

I love conventions! The fact that I’m a huge horror nerd makes it even better. Its
nice to see everyone get together that has a love for the same thing, be able to be
yourself, and just let loose and have fun. That’s what its all about. As to
memorable experiences, I think I have to stick to the philosophy of what happens at
a convention, stays at a convention. Lots of cool things happen. For those who have never been to one, I’d highly suggest it. You won’t be disappointed!

Any specific type of movies or specific people you would  like to work with in the future?

No specific movies, but I’d love to work on a film with Robert Rodriguez, Tim Curry,
Bruce Campbell, and so on. Seriously, too many to list.

If I’m not mistaken, you are currently based out of Minnesota, do you have any plans to relocate to LA or NY?

Yes. I plan on relocating to LA in the next few years. I still get plenty of gigs
living here. Its centralized so wherever I go, it’s the same distance. But, if I
want to make in the big leagues, I need to be where the action is.

Any upcoming or past  projects you think may interest of readers?

I just completed a film out in Mississippi called ‘Shreik of the Sasquach’. I can’t
say much about it yet, but I think the title kind of says it all, hehe. Its currently in post production and is planned to be out by early 2011. Its by the same director that brought you ’Dead Clowns’ and ’Torment’. You can find more info on it by visiting the website at www.b-horror.com. Also, you can check out ‘Strip Club Slasher’, which is a great ode to the 80’s slasher film. The film offers lots of laughs, gore, nudity, and all the other stuff in between. You can find out more information on it by visiting the website at www.stripclubslasher.com. For moreinformation on any other films, you can visit my personal website at www.scarletsalem.net.

What are some of your favorite favorite Horror, Sci-Fi or Action movies (your own excluded)?

A few of my favorite films are, ‘Legend’, ‘Day and Dawn of the Dead’(originals),
‘Return of the Living Dead’ (1&2), ‘Hellraiser’, ‘Alien’, ‘The Exorcist’, ‘Pet
Cematary’, ‘Big Trouble in Little China’, ‘The Shining’, ‘IT’, ‘Fright Night’, ‘The
Lost Boys’, ’Prince of Darkness’ and ‘Predator’. Those are some films I could watch
on a daily basis and never get sick of them. That’s when you know they’re your
favorites.
