Splice (2009)
Sci-Fi/Thriller Rated R
Plot
Two young rebellious scientists are told by their employers to halt groundbreaking work that has seen them produce new creatures with medical benefits by splicing together multiple organisms' DNA. They decide to secretly continue their work, but this time splicing in human DNA.
Acting
Sarah Polley is very good as the increasingly creepy but still mostly likable lead character, and Adrien Brody as her partner in work and love, and Delphine Chaneac as the half human creature, are both quite strong in there roles. The supporting cast play very small parts, as the movie focuses almost solely on these three characters.
Gore
Two earlier experimental creatures claw each other to death pretty brutally. The creature stabs a few people with her/his tail.
Sex/Nudity
There is a completely clothed sex scene between Polley and Brody. The creature is stripped nude by Polley while being punished, the creature has a full nude sex scene with Brody, and Polley is alter raped by the creature which has now turned Male.
Final Thoughts
Basically this is a classier, more well acted and thought out, but less entertaining version of "Species". It tells a solid story with compelling characters, but does get a little to slow at times and really could have benefited from having a few other well developed characters to break up the main trio a bit. Still very much worth watching, and you should see this, and if you haven't already, check out Species as well.
