Survival of the Dead (2009)

Horror     Rated R

Plot

On an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state

Acting

Most all of the cast as with most Romero movies is good, but not great, but Kenneth Walsh is very good as one of the lead characters, and Athena Karkanis was better than most in a supporting role.

Gore

There is lots of gunshots to the head, some of which lead to large chunks if flesh flying off, and sometimes exploding heads as well as heads being sliced or impaled by a variety of objects. Also some zombie bites, and attacks, one of which is particularly violent.

Sex/Nudity

There's a brief scene in which the lesbian character played by Karkanis masturbates while fully clothed in the middle of the woods with her two male friends just standing around.

Final Thoughts

Although set on an island and not having the tradition Western setting physically, the story plays out very much like a modern day western with zombies. However the Zombies here are not really the villains, there are basically pawns of the main villains. It also moves pretty slowly and focuses almost solely on the story with a few short action sequences thrown in to add drama to the story, which it self is very well written and never gets boring, Definitely a worth while entry into Romero's Dead series and as strong as any of them with them following Dawn. Very good movie that I encourage all to see.
